Who was that woman?
A mysterious woman detained a Hessian colonel far from Trenton while General Washington’s army was crossing the Delaware River? She was described as the “exceedingly beautiful widow of a doctor.” By entertaining the Hessian commander on Christmas night 1776, she kept hundreds of his soldiers 25 miles away from the battle.
Two centuries later, nobody knows her identity. She’s one of the many historic people who appear in my latest nonfiction book, Against the Ice: the Story of December 1776.
The other book I finished during last year’s lockdown was Murder at Killbuck Island. Researching it took me to an old cemetery surrounded by a stone wall in southeastern Pennsylvania. I was looking for the graves of two robbers who had been hanged. I found them – in the weeds just outside the cemetery wall. Inscribed on one gravestone was the word OUTLAW.
I’ll be talking about the merry widow and the outlaws and their robberies during my ZOOM program at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 23.
